The rise of fake accounts on social media platform X has been identified as the primary factor behind the staggering 57,000 victims of crypto phishing scams in February. According to the latest report from Scam Sniffer, a staggering $46.8 million was lost to these scams, with the majority of victims falling prey to phishing comments from impersonated Twitter accounts.

The report revealed that the Ethereum mainnet accounted for 78% of the total thefts, with ERC-20 tokens being the primary assets stolen. It highlighted that the majority of Ethereum token thefts were a result of users signing phishing signatures and transaction approvals, such as Permit, IncreaseAllowance, and Uniswap Permit2. Furthermore, scammers have now started using account abstraction wallets as token approval spenders, showcasing a new level of sophistication in their tactics.

Despite a higher number of victims compared to January, February saw a decrease in the total amount stolen, alongside a notable reduction in the number of victims who lost over $1 million. However, high-profile individuals and organizations were not exempt from these attacks, with the likes of MicroStrategy, Compound Finance, Rocket Pool, Blockchain Capital, and even Vitalik Buterin falling victim to account hacks and subsequent thefts.

The shift towards ‘approval phishing methods to steal funds has been noted as a concerning trend, with scammers leveraging social media accounts and fake personas to deceive victims into granting access to their wallets. This sophisticated approach has led to an increasing number of millennials being targeted, as highlighted by a recent FBI report on investment fraud.

The prevalence of these scams underscores the importance of heightened vigilance and security measures within the crypto community, as individuals and organizations alike remain susceptible to the evolving strategies employed by malicious actors.
